Lamberhurst 5 Mile Race cancelled

We have a very difficult decision to make about this race and our belief is that we need to make that decision sooner rather than later.

We drove the course yesterday and a good mile and a half stretch of it still has hard snow and ice because it isn't used by traffic. Additionally the hills down into - and back up from - the village still look as though they would be very dodgy to run on if there is a frost. You may or may not be aware that we had to cancel our two Christmas races last weekend because of the weather.

The weather forecast seems to indicate no let up in the conditions with the latest forecast being:

Christmas Day very cold, perhaps isolated light snow showers. Boxing Day dry, frosty with sunny spells away from lingering freezing fog patches. Monday feeling bitterly cold, chance of snow arriving

If we were to bet/guess we would suggest that there would be a very strong likelihood of us having to cancel this race - unless there is a dramatic improvement in the weather between now and New Years Day. If we're all honest, I suggest that we can't see that happening.

Our problem is that we have a Christmas holiday coming up and I think we have a duty to let those who are planning to take part know sooner rather than later. Some people may be planning special trips for New Year's Eve around our race. We also have St John Ambulance booked, our own team booked - and we don't think it fair to give them short notice if that can be avoided. We are also aware that email contact details we hold could be work addresses and so we probably need to make contact before the Christmas break

So, our Course Director, as things stand right now, is recommending cancellation - and we think we have to respect that advice. And so the race on New Year's Day will not now take place. Whilst we know that you will be disappointed we would ask you to understand why we made the decision.

Many races now do not offer a refund policy because of the up front expense incurred in putting on a race. However, we don't think this is fair and so we will offer a full refund of the entry fee you have paid. Alternatively, you may be aware that we are looking to stage our postponed Christmas Pudding Dash on Tuesday 28th next week. We don't have the same issues as we have with New Year's Day because the race is all on private land and they have a team of people who will work to get the course fit to run on - so if people can get to the venue then we can have a race. If you wish, you may transfer your entry to that race. Indeed, you also have the option to have your entry transferred to any of our 2011 programme of UK races - please see our website www.nice-work.org.uk and let us know if you would like to transfer; we will then make the arrangements.

We will also transfer our support for the Alzheimer's Research Trust to the race on Tuesday. We have loads of stuff to give away for youngsters who take part in the Children's race and we will also be looking to make a donation to ART as well as our Pudding Dash event charity, Christian Aid.

Once again, our apologies for the disappointing news - but we hope you understand.

On behalf of Cathy, myself and the Nice Work team we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy - and thawing - New Year.

Kind regards
Martin Burke
Race Director

Christmas races called off

Well, the weather has been threatening all week and, unfortunately, it decided to leave its mark on our weekend of Christmas races!

Despite the efforts of the Nice Work team and the Ashburnham staff, the Christmas Pudding Dash course became hazardous following a snow storm on Saturday morning. A delivery lorry stuck on the hill also didn't help and so the decision was taken to cancel the race. We did post messages on Facebook, Runners World and our own Nice Work site and we managed to reach most people some way or another. Unfortunately we were too late to prevent some runners arriving and we are grateful for their understanding.

At the end of the day we cannot take any risks with the safety of runners and spectators both on the course and travelling to and from the event - and the weather and road conditions in Ashburnham and surrounding areas from 11.00 onwards fully justified what was a really difficult decision for us.

We have rescheduled the race for Tuesday 28th December and we hope to see you all there then. It is a Bank Holiday and we'll still have mince pies, mulled wine, Christmas puds and other festive treats - so we'd love to see you then.

The Kent Christmas Cracker has also fallen victim to the weather due to an unsafe running surface and dangerous travel conditions. This race has been rescheduled for Sunday January 2nd 2011.

A chilly start to winter

Hopefully the early winter snow that cast us adrift from our offices and workplaces last week has gone for good – and we can now look forward to some great Christmas running weather.

We thought it timely to remind you that entries are still available for our three holiday races coming up over the next few weeks.

On Saturday 18th December the popular Christmas Pudding Dash returns for the fifth year and we’ll be looking for as many runners as possible to get into the Christmas spirit and dress appropriately. The race takes place in the stunning surroundings of Ashburnham Place, near Battle and in addition to a special Christmas medal and a Goody Bag, we’ll have Christmas puddings for all finishers plus there will be Mince Pies and Mulled Wine on offer as well. Christian Aid is our chosen charity for this year and they will be bringing along a film crew – so another reason to dress up!

Entries are available online via www.runnersworld.co.uk/events or you can download an entry form from our website www.nice-work.org.uk.

A day later on Sunday December 19th we return to Fowlmead Country Park, near Deal, for the 5th Kent Christmas Cracker. Once again we have medals, a goody bag and Christmas puddings for all finishers plus Mince Pies and Mulled Wine – for some reason we don’t normally have many fancy dress participants for this race – so it would be good to see some on the day!

Entries are available online via www.runnersworld.co.uk/events or you can download an entry form from our website www.nice-work.org.uk.

We have been asked to organise a New Year’s Day race to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust and so, for those brave souls who want to start 2011 with a challenging run, the Lamberhurst New Year’s Day 5 Mile Race is perfect! A couple of hills and some top running scenery make this an ideal location for a great race.

Once again, entries are available online via www.runnersworld.co.uk/events or you can download an entry form from our website www.nice-work.org.uk.

Looking ahead to 2011

For runners in East Sussex looking to train for a spring marathon, the organisers of the Sussex Marathon are holding marathon training days in Battle on 30th January and 27th February. More information from info@sussexmarathon.co.uk And from the same team, the Royal 5K will take place next year on April 29th - the date of the Royal Wedding. More details on www.royal5k.co.uk

We are well ahead of previous year’s entries for the Ashford & District 10K on February 6th and this popular event looks set to top last year’s record entry. On Saturday March 12th we will also have the second running of the Reading St Patrick’s 5 Mile Race at the University. This event is looking to help the students’ charity fundraising ahead of the Reading Half Marathon which takes place a week later.

Also coming in thick and fast are entries for the Lydd Half Marathon on Sunday March 13th.We also have a race lined up in Wittersham – between Tenterden and Rye and near Ashford - on Sunday February 20th. This will be the second running of the Isle of Oxney Hot Soup 5 Mile Dash – it had a great first year, spoiled only by the incessant rain, so we’re hoping for blue sky and sunshine this time!

More information on all races are available on our website www.nice-work.org.uk and you can enter all the events via www.runnersworld.co.uk/events

Our portfolio of events is set to increase fairly dramatically in 2011 with our appointment to manage a number of additional races on behalf of clubs, community groups and charities – and we’ll bring you news of these in due course.

Overseas events

We still have spaces available for our trip to Bruges for the Ostend to Bruges 10 Mile Race on March 5th. This is always a popular weekend and 2011 marks our 7th visit to the event – spaces are still available and the weekend will include plenty of time to enjoy the delights of Bruges!

Later in the spring we have our annual trip to Paris for the Paris Marathon, to Montreuil-sur-Mer for the Ramparts 10K and to Luxembourg for the Night Run. More information on our website www.nice-work.org.uk

We also hope to release full details of our trips to Dublin for the half marathon and to Reykjavik for the Fire and Ice Marathon within the next few days.

You can always visit www.nice-work.org.uk for more information on all our 2011 trips. Alternatively you can call us on 01797 230999 or email info@nice-work.org.uk .

If we don’t see you at one of our Christmas events, may we wish you a very Happy Christmas and a happy and injury-free New Year.

Kind regards

Martin and Cathy Burke
